King Cruiser

  King Cruiser
  • Overview:

In 1997 the King Cruiser ferry struck Anemone Reef, shearing of the top of the reef and tearing a gaping hole in the side of the ship. She went down about a kilometer away with over 500 passengers aboard. Thankfully, boats in the area were able to rescue all aboard.

  • Characteristics:

The ship is 85 meters long and 25 meters wide and rests upright in 32 meters of water. The shallowest part of the wreck is the wheelhouse at about 17 or 18 meters. Descent and ascent are carried out along a mooring line attached to the stern.

  • Highlights:

The wreck attracts large schools of fish such as jacks, snappers, rabbitfish, and yellowtail barracudas. There are literally hundreds of scorpionfish on the wreck, camouflaging themselves perfectly with the encrusted and rusted iron sides of the ship. Groups of huge lionfish lay in wait for prey near the propellers, and you may find a sleeping nurse shark there as well.

  • Marcia's notes:

The depth of the wreck and the frequent presence of current mean that this dive is not one we recommend to novice divers. Dives here tend to be relatively short even for divers with experience in deep diving and with good air consumption.
