  Koh Bida Nai
  • Overview:

This teardrop-shaped rock is one of a pair of uninhabited limestone islands jutting up from the seabed. It is located about 45 km (27 miles) from Phuket. The island is small, and can be circumnavigated on a single dive when the conditions are right.

  • Characteristics:

There is wonderfully varied topography ranging from hard coral gardens to dramatic cliff faces. The maximum depth is about 25 to 30 meters at the northern end of the island. A cluster of boulders off the southeastern tip is worth checking out.

  • Highlights:

Leopard sharks often nap in the sandy areas, and reef fish are abundant. In the cracks and crevices of the limestone rock, look for lobsters, banded boxer shrimp, ornate ghost pipefish, and nudibranchs. Walls and boulders are covered in colorful soft coral trees and fans.

  • Marcia's notes:

This site is appropriate for divers of all levels. Mild to moderate tidal currents run from northwest to southeast and vice versa. Most dives are drift dives, but when currents are mild, it is possible to swim all the way around the island.
