As the name implies, this site is located at the far
southern tip of Koh Racha Noi. It is a thrilling dive site both because of the
challenges it offers and also because it boasts a beautiful pinnacle covered with
soft corals and fans at the southern end.
Characteristics:
Racha Noi island ends with submerged boulders
resting on a granite spur. The boulders give way at about 20 meters to a rock
plateau which is swept by currents. As the plateau angles deeper, a pinnacle
emerges, formed of several spikes rising to 9 meters. The spur ends in the sand at
depths of 30 meters and beyond.
Highlights:
The pinnacle at South Tip is stunningly beautiful with
soft corals and fans attached to the sides of the pinnacle spikes. This site is
known for manta ray sightings as well as for other pelagics such as schools of
chevron barracuda. Red-tooth triggerfish are also common here.
Marcia's notes:
The site is not normally visited during new moon and full
moon periods when currents are strongest. This site is recommended for experienced
divers only, and perhaps for this reason more than any other, few daytrip boats
from Phuket include it in their itineraries.
