 Homerun Reef
|
|
Characteristics:The reef, dominated by hard corals and scattered
rocks, slopes from about 10 meters to a sandy bottom at 20 to 25 meters. Near the
mouth of the northernmost bay (Bay 1) lies a small wreck at a depth of about 23
meters.
Highlights:Longsnout pipefish are sometimes seen in the sandy areas
as are mantis shrimp. The reef itself is home to the usual tropical reef fish such
as trumpet fish, cornet fish, puffers, and porcupine fish. And schools of snappers
and fusiliers flow past in undulating rivers.
Marcia's notes:Due to its location at the northern end of the island, tidal
currents can be swifter here than on other reefs further to the south. This site is
appropriate for all levels of divers.
