 Lucy's Reef
|
Overview:Situated between the third and fourth bays on the east side
of Koh Racha Yai, this dive site continues the general theme of this side of the
island: boulders and hard corals. There are several stories about how the reef got
its name—my favorite is that Lucy was the nickname of a resident hawksbill turtle
that lived on the reef.
|
Characteristics:At the northern end of the site, near the middle bay,
the bottom is quite sandy, but peppered with pore coral heads full of life (the bay
itself faces south). To the south, the familiar staghorn fields take over.
Highlights:The sandy areas at the northern end of the dive are home
to huge patches of spotted garden eels, at a depth of 15 to 20 meters. Look for
striped catfish under the bommies at about 20 meters, too. Schooling barracuda may
make an appearance here, as well as rainbow runners.
Marcia's notes:The currents at this dive site can be complex, especially when
they are running fast. They may appear to change direction, and there may be
noticeable down currents. Continue your dive as planned; the currents will switch
back again. The site is appropriate for all certified divers.
