Staghorn Reef

  Staghorn Reef
  • Overview:

The reef stretches between the second and third of a series of five small bays on the eastern side of Koh Racha Yai. As might be obvious, it takes its name from the fields of staghorn coral carpeting the entire extent of the reef to a depth of about 25 meters.

  • Characteristics:

The reef begins at about 12 meters with pore corals and rocks mixed together and slopes to the sand, where the staghorn forests take over. The southern end of the reef features a jumble of shallow boulders extending from the headland enclosing the middle bay of the island.

  • Highlights:

The staghorns host a variety of juvenile reef fish such as yellow boxfish. In addition, typical reef fish like pygmy angelfish, filefish, morays, and triggerfish are common, and banded sea kraits hunt among the corals and rocks. Groups of yellowtail barracuda school in the area.

  • Marcia's notes:

This is typically an easy drift dive with the current, beginning at either the second bay and going south during a falling tide or beginning at the middle bay and drifting north with the rising tide. Appropriate for all levels of divers, including students.
