 Beacon Reef
|
Overview:Beacon Reef runs the entire length of the eastern side of Koh Similan (Island 8).
There is a huge navigational beacon on a promontory above the beach there, giving the beach, the reef, and
the site their names. It features the only shipwreck at recreational depth in the Similans.
|
Characteristics:Beacon Reef is a steep, sloping, fringing reef typical of the eastern sides
of the islands and is made up of small rocks and healthy hard coral stands extending to a depth of 30
meters. At the southern tip of the island, a cluster of boulders marks the end of the dive site.
Highlights:The wreck of the dive boat Atlantis X, which went down in 2002 is certainly a
special attraction of this site. The boat rests at a 45° angle against the reef with its bow at about 15
meters and stern at 30 meters. It draws some fish life, particularly schools of batfish swimming in and out
of the windows. This reef is also notable for having one of the healthiest coral gardens in the entire
island chain with dozens of types of hard coral, impressive coral heads covered in feather stars and tube
worms, plus soft corals all in one place.
Marcia's notes:This is a nice drift dive, and while the site is steep and deep, it’s not
essential to go beyond about 20 meters to enjoy the spectacular coral garden. A quick turn around the
wreck is sufficient to visit it.
