Christmas Point is the extension of Koh Ba-Ngu (Island 9) from its northwest
corner. It is another of the dramatic boulder sites that the Similans are known for. The dive site is
centered on the boulders surrounding a pinnacle that reaches the surface and is separated from the island
by a channel.
Characteristics:
The dive site descends from a hard coral garden in the shallows at 10
meters to a sandy bottom at around 40 meters. The boulders create a maze of swim-thoughs with the
shallowest at 12 meters and the deepest—a marvelous arch under a boulder with an air pocket in it—at 24
meters.
Highlights:
This is a site where both large and small creatures are to be found. In the blue,
mantas are known to pass by, and around the rocks, napoleon wrasse are often spotted. You may see schools
of emperor and trevally coming in to feed as well. The rocks themselves are covered with colorful sea fans
and soft corals all around the site. In the sand you may find ribbon eels and fire dartfish as well as
pipefish and other smaller reef dwellers.
Marcia's notes:
Currents at this site can be strong depending on the tide, and it is quite
deep, so watch your air consumpton and stick close to the rocks so as not to tire yourself. For your own safety,
please don't be tempted to breathe the trapped air in the arch swim-through!
