 Deep Six
|
Overview:At the rocky northern end of Koh Pa-Yu (Island 7), Deep Six is a boulder site with
the shallowest outcrop breaching the surface near the island, and with dozens of other huge rocks tumbling
down to a depth of 30 meters. A long and complicated story explains the name of the dive site, but suffice
it to say that Koh Pa-Yu was once called "Island 6" and has since been renumbered!
|
Characteristics:The site consists of one huge central rock surrounded by smaller rocks,
creating many swim throughs. On the perifery of the central rock, in the sand, are other boulders, with
channels between them.
Highlights:The swim throughs are great places to look for shy, shadow-loving animals such
as cleaner pipefish, octopus, groupers and oriental sweetlips. The passages also house soft fan and whip
corals. In the sandy areas, look for purple and red fire dartfish. Schools of bannerfish congregate on the
eastern side of the site.
Marcia's notes:Currents at this site can be strong, so stick close to the rocks until it
is time for your safety stop. Then swim out from the island so that the boat can come in close for a pick up.
Because of the currents, there is also a chance of a thermocline, so for those who dive in shorts, beware!
