 East of Eden
|
Overview:East of Eden is, as might be guessed, found along the eastern side of the island.
Local lore has it that a
film crew spent an entire week shooting footage at this dive site for a television segment, such is its
beauty.
|
Characteristics:This is a steeply sloping reef that extends to depths of 30 meters and more.
The best parts of the site are in the deeper areas, between 25 and 30 meters. It is characterized by fields
of staghorn corals, table, corals, fan and whip corals. It features a large coral head at the southern end of
the site.
Highlights:There is a profusion of marine life on this site. Reef fish are in abundance,
and fusiliers stream by in long ribbons. Garden eels are found in the sand in the deeper regions, as are
Kuhl’s stingrays and leopard sharks. The most famous feature of the site is a towering coral head that
begins at 8 meters and descends to 20 meters. It is called Ruan Gluay Mai, or "Orchid Garden", because of the
colorful soft corals that adorn it. Not to be missed!
Marcia's notes:This is normally done as a leisurely drift dive from north to south, ending
beyond Ruan Gluay Mai in a large colony of short yellow soft corals called Japanese Garden--a
good place to look for turtles.
