Use your imagination to see how the three rocks emerging from the water south of
Koh Similan (Island 8) might resemble an elephant. This site features house-sized boulders arranged roughly
east to west in water 35 to 40 meters deep.
Characteristics:
On the western side of the site there is one very large boulder whose top
is visible above the water (the back of the elephant?). On the eastern side, a second very large boulder
(the head?) also breaks the surface. Between them and surrounding the smaller rock are dozens of other
boulders stacked on one another forming swim-throughs and magnificent underwater scenery.
Highlights:
This site is not one of the “fishier” dives in the Similans, but some very
interesting marine life is to be found. Look for fire dartfish and mantis shrimp in the sand, and clown
triggerfish, juvenile sweetlips, and various angelfish among the rocks. There is a horizontal crack on the
northern side of the main rock that serves as a hideaway for white tip reef sharks.
Marcia's notes:
It is very easy to forget how deep this site is when zigging and zagging
through the many swim-throughs, so do those first and then ascend to a shallower depth so that you have
enough air to enjoy the reef life.
