Similans ~ Island 3 ♦ Hin Phae (Shark Fin Reef)

  Hin Phae
  • Overview:

The word “phae” in Thai means “to float.” So Hin Phae should translate to “Floating Rock,” which makes sense given that the tops of three small pinnacles are barely visible above the surface. They look to some like the tips of shark fins emerging from the water.

  • Characteristics:

The dive site is a one kilometer long granite ridge running northwest to southeast. On the northeastern side, the rocks are long, wide blocks descending to sand at 20 meters. The southwestern side is steeper and deeper at 30 meters and features huge boulders that create swim-throughs.

  • Highlights:

One of the rare fish that inhabit this site is the napoleon wrasse. Adult cube boxfish are also found here, as well as clown triggerfish, unicorn surgeonfish, and a large number of batfish. In the sand surrounding the rock you may find white tip reef sharks, leopard sharks, and rays.

  • Marcia's notes:

Like many of the sites in the Similans, this site is deep and subject to moderate to strong tidal currents. During strong currents, one side or the other of the site will provide shelter, depending on whether the tide is rising or falling. We recommend this dive for experienced Open Water divers/Advanced Open Water divers and above.
