 West of Eden
|
Overview:As different as east and west, West of Eden is a complement to its sister site on
the other side of the island. Like many west-facing coasts in the Similans, this site offers boulders
a-plenty to serve as hiding places for marine life. Unusually for west-facing sites, however, is the
proliferation of soft corals covering the walls.
|
Characteristics:The site consists of one huge central rock surrounded by smaller rocks, creating
many swim throughs. On the perifery of the central rock, in the sand are other boulders, with channels
between them.
Highlights:All sorts of marine life love these rocks. Look for sea snakes, ghost pipefish,
perhaps a frogfish, long-nose hawkfish, nudibranchs and other such creatures. This is one of the few places
in the Similans where you might find ribbon eels in the rubble and sand. In the afternoons, be on the lookout
for hunters like trevally and fusiliers coming in to feast on the glassfish.
Marcia's notes:This is a relatively small dive site, so take your time and explore
thoroughly. Beyond the limits of the rocky areas, you will find only large patches of rubble and sand,
but there may be a chance to see some sharks away from the rocks.
