The name of this dive site literally means “red rock.” While the rock itself is
dark granite, it supports a healthy population of dark pink soft coral trees which give it its name. The
rock protrudes a few meters from the water, but like an iceberg, it is massive under the surface.
Characteristics:
Hin Daeng is a roughly circular dive site with peaks and valleys running from
east to west. Three of the peaks in the center break the surface, with lower rocky outcrops topping out at
varying depths down to the sand at 40 meters and beyond.
Highlights:
The “big” things here at Hin Daeng are manta rays. The rock is in open sea so that
it offers a welcome rest stop to ocean going animals needing to feed and visit a cleaning station. Other
pelagics such as jacks, barracudas and fusiliers hunting. There are also hundreds of moray eels on the site,
sometimes several sticking their heads out of just one hole in the reef.
Marcia's notes:
Hin Daeng and its companion Hin Muang are open ocean sites accessible only during the
months of November to May. The sites are deep and may be current swept. Therefore they are not recommended
for inexperienced divers.
