Hin Muang

  Hin Muang
  • Overview:

The companion site to Hin Daeng is “purple rock” or Hin Muang. The name refers to the color of soft coral trees growing on the sides of the rock. Unlike Hin Daeng, Hin Muang is completely submerged.

  • Characteristics:

Hin Muang is a long ridge running east to west, approximately 20 meters wide and 200 meters long, and topped by 5 pinnacles along its length. The highest pinnacle reaches within 8 meters of the surface, and the wall face of that peak drops precipitously to 60 meters or more on the south side.

  • Highlights:

Like Hin Daeng, there is plenty of reef life to enjoy. There are many giant groupers resting on the ledges, and reef fish abound. During the months of March to May, when plankton growth provides a banquet for them, whale sharks regularly appear here, as do manta rays. So keep a lookout into the blue while you are enjoying the dive.

  • Marcia's notes:

Hin Muang and its companion Hin Daeng are open ocean sites accessible only during the months of November to May. Hin Muang is exceptionally deep, and currents may make it necessary to seek the shelter of the pinnacles. This dive is not recommended for novices.
