Tachai Pinnacle

  Tachai Pinnacle
  • Overview:

Just off the southern tip of Koh Tachai at a depth of 30-40 meters is found a small ridge with its main peak rising to within 12 meters of the surface. There are actually two pinnacles joined by a sandy saddle, giving the site its more commonly known name: Twin Peaks.

  • Characteristics:

The two pinnacles are somewhat independent of one another. Most dives focus on the larger of the two, generally called “the first pinnacle.” The smaller “second” pinnacle begins at 24-25 meters and rises to 18 meters. The larger pinnacle rises to 12 meters and is surrounded by a large jumble of boulders, dropping down to 35 meters and beyond. There are swim-throughs between the boulders on the west side while on the east side the rocks are smaller and colonized by whip corals.

  • Highlights:

Tachai Pinnacle lies across the path of prevailing currents, which serves to bring large amounts of nutrient-rich water to the site. Therefore, it is another spot known for frequent manta sightings, particularly to the south of the first pinnacle, as well as the occasional whale shark, both of which are big plankton eaters. In addition, schools of hunting barracuda, jacks, fusiliers and other ocean-going predators give this site an exciting frontier feel. Numbers of leopard sharks can be found in sleeping in the sand.

  • Marcia's notes:

It is possible to swim the 50 meters that separate the first (southern) and the second pinnacles by going due north at a depth of 24 meters, when conditions are favorable. However, the site is famous for its strong currents, so depending on the moon phase and the tide height, it may or may not be possible to explore the entire site.
