Koh Tachai a small key-shaped island located approximately 20 km north of Koh Bon,
and 40 km south of Richelieu Rock, it lies roughly halfway between the Similans and Richelieu Rock, even
further to the north. The reef is found on the southeastern coast.
Characteristics:
Tachai Reef runs from the furthest point on the eastern side of the island
southwest to the southern tip. It is a typical east-side sloping reef beginning at 10 meters and descending
to sand at 25 meters. Expect a reef composed of mainly hard corals and scattered rocks.
Highlights:
With its fields of staghorns and pore coral heads, this reef attracts large
numbers of reef fish. It is also something of a nursery with its mild current. Check the sandy areas for
interesting small fish such as the razor wrasse and look too for the rare and reclusive twin-spot lionfish,
with its distinctive coloring (two spots on its dorsal fin and broad light/dark bands on its wing-like
pectoral fins) hiding in nooks and crannies.
Marcia's notes:
This is an easy drift dive and not too deep. It is sometimes included in
liveaboard itineraries as a sunset or a night dive, which is the best time to see the elusive twin-spot
lionfish.
